Crypto billionaire Justin Sun recently officially announced a significant upgrade for TRON (TRX). According to him, the blockchain he founded is transitioning to Post-Quantum (PQ), pulling the trigger ahead of the top chains, Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).
In a post on his verified social media account on X, Sun highlighted the slow pace of Bitcoin and Ethereum in PQ migration. He stated that the Bitcoin community is still debating whether to freeze quantum-vulnerable addresses, while Ethereum is still forming research committees. In comparison, TRON is already making advances in tackling the future threat.
Sun revealed on Wednesday that TRON has launched its PQ upgrade plan. He claimed that the move makes it the first mainstream public chain to deploy National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) compliant PQ signature schemes on the mainnet.
ADVERTISEMENTAdditionally, the Chinese-born entrepreneur emphasized that quantum security shouldn’t be up for debate. Instead, it should now be integrated as a feature. He ensured that his team would safeguard TRON users’ assets against any quantum threat.
Sun said TRON will release its technical roadmap for PQ migration soon.
TRON’s decisive action to address Q-Day comes in response to Google Quantum AI team’s warning that the crypto community may be underestimating the looming threat. Researchers from the multinational tech company found that a quantum computer could break Bitcoin’s Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) in just minutes with fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, or 1,200 to 1,450 high-quality qubits.
ADVERTISEMENTGoogle’s report contradicts earlier expert assumptions that it would require 13 million qubits to hack into Bitcoin’s cryptographic design in a day or 317 million qubits to accomplish the same feat in an hour.
As a result, the researchers turned back the clock on the consensus’ expected Q-Day by over a decade to as early as 2029. The paper sparked renewed discussion about building Bitcoin’s quantum-proofing, with even BTC OG Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream, joining in. Strategy Executive Chairman Michael Saylor also disclosed that it has launched a dedicated Bitcoin security program in cooperation with global cybersecurity specialists to “harden” the premier crypto asset’s quantum resilience.
Meanwhile, the Ethereum core team has ramped its PQ initiative to assure ETH’s “cryptographic agility.” It aims to upgrade the chain’s core primitives without destabilizing its operations.
