Analysis: Institutions are overly optimistic about the crypto market, and history suggests that the bottom has not yet arrived.

BTC-1,38%

PANews February 10 News, Greeks.live macro researcher Adam posted on the X platform that the crypto market has stabilized somewhat, with a significant decline in the implied volatility (IV) of major maturities. However, the actual volatility (RV) over the past week remains relatively high, resulting in a record average decrease of 45% in the one-week VRP. Specifically, the data shows a drop from last week’s +20% level to the current -25% level, a rare phenomenon. This indicates that the market is rapidly reducing its volatility expectations, and the pace may be too fast, as Bitcoin’s volatility tends to be highly clustered. Institutions are somewhat overly optimistic about the market, and this recklessness could be very passive if a second wave of decline occurs. The irrationality in the options market has clearly increased, and institutions have been confused by recent market movements. Historically, such situations often indicate that the bottom has not yet arrived.

Ethereum ETF Holders Stare at 43% Losses as ETH Tumbles Below $2,000—Far Worse Than Bitcoin ETF

Bloomberg Intelligence data shows the average spot Ethereum ETF investor is sitting on a 43% unrealised loss, with an estimated cost basis of \$3,500 and ETH now trading near \$1,950. That is more than double the 21% drawdown suffered by Bitcoin ETF holders. Despite \$5.3 billion in paper losses, ETF outflows have been surprisingly modest—net inflows have only shrunk from \$15 billion to below \$12 billion—suggesting holders are refusing to capitulate. The question is not whether they ca

Bitcoin futures open interest has fallen to its lowest since 2024, as waning institutional demand puts pressure on BTC prices.

On February 13, news reports indicate that Bitcoin's recent price has been under continuous pressure, failing to stay above $72,000. Meanwhile, the total open interest in Bitcoin futures has fallen to $34 billion, hitting a new low since November 2024, down approximately 28% from 30 days ago. Although the number of open contracts measured in Bitcoin remains around 502,450, indicating that overall leverage demand has not significantly decreased, forced liquidations have accumulated to $5.2 billion, intensifying market concerns that Bitcoin may fall back to the $60,000 support level. The weak bullish leverage demand in the market highlights a decoupling of Bitcoin from traditional financial markets. Over the past month, Bitcoin has declined by 28%, with investors lacking clear catalysts. At the same time, gold prices have returned to the psychological level of $5,000, and the S&P 500 index is approaching its all-time high. Some analysts believe that the risk-averse sentiment is driven by a soft U.S. labor market. Data from the U.S. Department of Labor shows that only 181,000 new jobs are expected to be added in 2025, below expectations, but the White House emphasizes that slowing population growth is leading to decreased job demand.
