The estate represents Suzanne Adams, an 83-year-old woman killed in August at her Connecticut home. Police say her son, Stein-Erik Soelberg, beat and strangled her. He later died by suicide at the scene.
The complaint states that Soelberg came to trust only the chatbot. It claims he viewed others as enemies, including his mother and public workers. The estate argues ChatGPT failed to challenge those beliefs or encourage professional help.
Claims focus on product design and safeguards
The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of designing and distributing an unsafe product. It alleges Microsoft approved the release of GPT-4o despite known risks. The filing describes GPT-4o as the most dangerous version released in 2024.
The estate argues the companies failed to install safeguards for vulnerable users. It seeks a court order requiring stronger protections within the chatbot. It also requests monetary damages and a jury trial.
