According to Reuters, citing the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. government is preparing to introduce a series of measures to restrict Chinese companies and individuals from using U.S. cloud computing services in order to protect U.S. data security and technological advantages. These measures may include export licensing requirements for cloud service providers, background checks for cloud service users, regulation of cloud service content, etc.
If the new regulation is passed, it may require US cloud service providers such as Amazon and Microsoft to obtain government permission before they can provide cloud computing services related to AI chips in China. The Commerce Department is expected to implement the restrictions in the coming weeks as part of an expansion of semiconductor export controls introduced in October.
