X's new feature raises concerns about racial discrimination and crypto kidnapping

The launch of the user location display feature by X (formerly known as Twitter) immediately sparked a wave of racism, harassment, and doxxing (the act of publicly sharing someone’s personal information without their consent) on Crypto Twitter. In addition, this update has also raised serious concerns about personal safety, as experts warn that it could facilitate criminals targeting cryptocurrency users and increase the risk of kidnapping.

Twitter’s new location tool: Transparency or hidden danger?

The “About This Account” feature, recently rolled out by X, will automatically display the country or region associated with each user account. This is considered one of the platform’s biggest moves toward identity transparency. Users cannot disable this feature, meaning all location information will always be publicly displayed on their profile.

According to company representatives, this feature aims to combat misinformation, reduce bot activity, and provide more context for conversations on the platform. Nikita Bier, X’s Head of Product, stated:

“This is an important first step to protect the integrity of the global town square. We will continue to develop more ways for users to verify content on X.”

This update comes after months of internal discussions about increasing accountability and reducing anonymity in interactions on the platform. However, the negative consequences were swift and evident.

Racism surges after the update

Immediately after the feature was implemented, many users reported becoming targets of hate and discrimination. Crypto Twitter was quickly flooded with images of xenophobic comments, mocking posts, and harassment targeting users whose locations had just been revealed, making them easy targets.

Numerous accounts reported being targeted solely because of their nationality or region of residence, turning ordinary discussions into hotspots for racist rhetoric and regional prejudice. This change exposed long-simmering cultural conflicts within the crypto community, where anonymity once served as an effective shield against personal identity-based attacks.

Heightened security concerns: The looming fear of kidnapping

Beyond the issue of racism, the new feature has also sparked deep concerns about personal security. Many prominent figures in the crypto space warn that making location information public, even just at the regional level, could put users in real danger.

The risk of kidnapping, extortion, or crimes targeting someone’s residence—already present in areas where crypto assets make individuals vulnerable—has now increased. For many in the community, anonymity is a crucial layer of defense. With this protection weakened, cybercriminals can more easily identify and target high-value individuals.
