U.S. officials have investigated whether Bitmain’s Bitcoin mining machines from China could be remotely controlled to facilitate espionage activities or disrupt the power grid, according to Bloomberg. The months-long review, named “Operation Red Sunset,” was led by the Department of Homeland Security and discussed at the National Security Council. A previous assessment had identified national security risks related to equipment placed near U.S. military bases, highlighting vulnerabilities that could allow remote access.

Bitmain has denied all allegations and asserted compliance with U.S. laws. Investigators reportedly intercepted shipments, disassembled the devices, and inspected the chips and firmware, while also examining tariff and import issues. This scrutiny reflects broader concerns about hardware placed near strategic facilities. If new guidelines are issued, the crypto mining industry may face stricter security and supply chain requirements.
