China Issues Online Finance Marketing Rules Banning Virtual Currency Promotion

China’s central bank and seven other departments issued online financial marketing measures that ban promotion of illegal financial activities, including virtual currency issuance and trading. The measures will take effect on September 30, 2026. Only financial institutions and legally authorized third-party internet platforms may engage in online marketing of financial products. The rules also classify illegal foreign exchange margin trading as illegal financial activity.
