I have spent years watching traders fail for the same reason: they lack discipline with risk. That’s why the 3-5-7 rule has become my compass when I trade, whether in cryptocurrencies or commodity trading. The idea is so simple it almost seems obvious, but believe me, most people don’t follow it.
It all starts with a basic question: how much am I willing to lose on a single trade? The answer should always be the same: never more than 3% of your total capital. Sounds small, right? But that’s precisely where the magic lies. This discipline forces you to analyze each entry as if it were critical because every loss affects your next move. I’ve seen traders with $100,000 accounts risking $5,000 on a single trade. A bad streak of three losses and they’ve already lost 15% of their capital. With the 3% rule, those same traders would have only lost 9% in the worst-case scenario.
Then there’s the second level: your total exposure. If you have multiple open positions, the combined risk should not exceed 5% of your capital. Imagine you have $50,000 in your account. That means across all your active trades, the maximum you can risk is $2,500. Many fail here because they see opportunities everywhere and open positions without considering the full picture. I see it differently: it’s a quality filter. If I can’t open a position without exceeding the 5%, it’s probably not a trade worth taking.
But here’s the most important part, and where you really make money: make sure your winning trades generate at least 7% more profit than what you lose. It’s not just about winning more often; it’s about winning bigger when you do. If you lose 3% on a failed trade, your next winner needs to recover that 3% plus an additional 7%. That completely changes your mindset. Suddenly, you’re not looking to trade every minute. You’re seeking high-probability setups where risk-reward makes sense.
I’ve applied this in both cryptocurrencies and commodity trading, and the result is the same: long-term survival. It’s not exciting, but it’s profitable. The 3-5-7 rule won’t make you rich quickly. What it does do is prevent you from losing everything while waiting for that truly worthwhile opportunity.
