If you're choosing an electricity provider in the Kanto area, recent analysis data reveals some interesting insights. The liberalization of the electricity market has significantly expanded your options, but many people are probably wondering which company is truly the cheapest. Last month, I thoroughly compared 33 electricity providers serving the Kanto region across three household types: single, two-person, and three-person households. It turns out that the optimal choice varies quite a bit depending on household size.
The first thing I noticed was the stability of Shin Energy Denki. Regardless of household size, it consistently ranked as one of the cheapest options in the Kanto area. Switching from Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) to Shin Energy Denki can save you nearly ¥14,470 annually, which is quite substantial. Even for singles, it saves about ¥550 per month, making it a noticeable difference for everyone.
Second is Octopus Energy. It also offers a reliably low rate structure in Kanto. For a three-person household, you can expect to save about ¥690 per month, totaling ¥8,220 annually. Even single households can save around ¥270 per month, making it a strong candidate regardless of lifestyle.
TERASEL Denki is also worth noting. As part of Itochu Enex, it’s highly reliable, and earning Rakuten points based on your monthly electricity bill is a subtle but significant benefit. For three-person households, you can save ¥7,540 annually plus earn points, making it especially appealing for those in the Rakuten ecosystem.
For those interested in bundle discounts, Mitsuuroko Denki is another option. If you bundle gas with your electricity contract, your gas bill gets a ¥220 monthly discount, which is ideal for households wanting to combine their electricity and gas services. The electricity rates for 2-3 person households are also cheaper than TEPCO’s.
Several major corporate-affiliated power companies also rank highly. Chugoku Electric Power tends to be cheaper for households with two or more people, and it offers point rewards based on electricity usage. CD Energy provides stable low rates regardless of household size, and it also offers gas bundle discounts.
For frequent drivers, companies like Idemitsu with their Idemitsu Denki and ENEOS with ENEOS Denki are interesting options. Combining these with fuel discounts can significantly increase overall savings.
Kansai Electric Power and Cosmo Denki are also available in Kanto and might be worth considering, especially for two-person households. Kansai Electric can offer substantial savings for households using around 300 kWh of electricity, and Cosmo Denki allows you to earn dPoints, which is ideal for those who regularly use dPoints.
Ultimately, when choosing an electricity provider in Kanto, the best approach is to base your decision on your household size and lifestyle. Many companies offer points rewards, bundle discounts, and fuel discounts, so comparing the total potential savings is the key to making the best choice.
