The 51st House of Representatives election in Japan will be held on the 8th of this month. According to Nihon Keizai Shimbun on the 2nd, Japanese Prime Minister and Liberal Democratic Party President Sanae Takaichi explicitly expressed her willingness to amend the constitution and include the Self-Defense Forces in the text on that day. Due to Article 9, Paragraph 2 of the Japanese Constitution, which states that Japan “shall not maintain land, sea, and air forces or other war potential, and shall not recognize the right of belligerency,” Takaichi’s remarks on constitutional revision have sparked strong criticism from public opinion. According to reports, on the 2nd, Takaichi delivered a campaign speech in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, for the House of Representatives election, saying, “In order to maintain their (Self-Defense Forces) dignity and strengthen their existence as a powerful force, we hope to be allowed to carry out the necessary constitutional amendments.” (Global Network)
