Abstract generation in progress

A new payment infrastructure supported by the People’s Bank of China has successfully launched the first example of the Laos central bank digital currency (CBDC) implementation. Operations in the Vientiane region have become possible following the connection to the People’s Bank of China’s digital RMB infrastructure.

Technical Infrastructure and Convenience in Application

The system’s design is based on real-time currency conversion and rapid observation processes. An important advantage for local businesses is that they do not need to change their existing devices—they can directly use the QR code-based payment method within their current infrastructure. For example, a transaction between 30,000 RMB and USD can be completed in real-time exchange rate and without additional commission charges.

Benefits for Tourists and Commercial Parties

Visitors from China now have the opportunity to pay with digital RMB via a mobile app. Sellers and businesses in Laos can immediately receive funds into their accounts, thus avoiding the long wait times associated with traditional cross-border payment methods. This development indicates deepening financial cooperation between the two countries and the accelerated practical application of CBDC technology.
