Haha, really. If it had been called "Digital Money" or some crappy name back then, it wouldn't have the same vibe now. Crypto just has that flavor.

Really, the logic of cryptography is right there, it should have been called that a long time ago... It sounds much better than something like "digital money."

The name "crypto" is really perfect, capturing both secrecy and a sense of technology. The person who came up with this name probably foresaw the crazy market that followed.
