The ECB really isn't backing down this time. Italy's attempt to move gold reserves has been suppressed... To put it simply, they're afraid that the independence of central banks will be undermined. This matter cannot be played with.

As soon as the ECB took action, it immediately suppressed Italy. Frankly, they're still afraid that your meddling with gold will undermine the central bank's independence... I really don't buy this logic.
