a16z warns: Bitcoin quantum-resistant upgrade is imminent, hundreds of billions of dollars at risk

[BlockBeats] On December 7, a16z published an article discussing an urgent topic: Can Bitcoin withstand attacks from quantum computers? The conclusion is rather pessimistic—if we don’t upgrade to quantum-resistant signatures now, it might be too late in the future.

What’s the problem? Two major issues. The first is efficiency dragging things down. Bitcoin upgrades are notoriously slow; if the community can’t reach consensus, hard forks are likely, and history shows just how tough these disputes can be. Now, with quantum-resistant proposals on the table, simply reaching consensus could take ages.

The second issue is even more critical—migration relies on individual initiative. Unlike some chains that can enforce upgrades, Bitcoin holders must manually move their coins to new addresses. Here’s the problem: what about wallets that have been dormant for years? Satoshi’s coins, lost-key coins, coins whose owners have passed away… all of these are exposed to quantum threats.

a16z estimates that there are several million high-risk bitcoins like this, worth hundreds of billions of dollars at current prices. If quantum computers really make a breakthrough, this money could vanish overnight. The window of time is closing, and it’s time to pay off this technical debt.

Bro, just looking at this situation feels pretty hopeless... Hundreds of billions of dollars get hit like this, and it still relies on people to voluntarily migrate. This logic really is a bit absurd.

Hundreds of billions of dollars just lying around waiting to be exploited? Hilarious, this is exactly the benefit of centralization.

Several million dormant coins are exposed to quantum threats. Isn’t this basically a ticking time bomb... The community can’t even reach a consensus, yet they’re thinking about upgrading? This is really way off the mark.

Hundreds of billions of dollars are just lying in risk like this, it's really unbearable. We have to see if the community can unite to push this matter forward.

Damn, are quantum computers really coming? Hundreds of billions of dollars in coins just taking hits like this? --- Satoshi's coins can never be moved, how do you even calculate that... --- The Bitcoin community can argue for three days straight after waking up, and now they're supposed to upgrade together? What a joke, haha. --- Relying on voluntary migration? Wake up, half the people don't even know how to keep their private keys safe. --- If this quantum threat really hits, holders will have to bear it themselves—A16z bailed a long time ago. --- Dormant wallets exposed to risk? Serves them right, what do you expect to do? --- We're talking about hundreds of billions of dollars, and you're counting on the community to be "responsible"? Nonsense. --- Haven't we learned enough from hard fork history? Now we're going to repeat it all over again. --- So basically, everyone's just betting that quantum computers come a bit slower... insane. --- Bitcoin's decentralization has now become an obstacle to upgrades—how ironic.
