Do you still remember that massive outage that left traders worldwide utterly baffled?

Back then, experts from all sides were guessing: Was it a hacker attack? Did the system crash? Or did some programmer slip up? Community forums were practically in an uproar.

But the truth turned out to be so absurd it was almost funny—the staff at the CME Group data center actually forgot to drain the water from the cooling tower before the cold snap hit.

You read that right, it was really just that simple and brutal of a mistake.

The cooling system froze into a solid block of ice, the servers’ heat dissipation completely failed, and temperatures soared straight to the red alert zone. The world’s largest futures exchange was literally forced to shut down for a full 10 hours.

What happened to all those promised backups? What about the disaster recovery plans?

After seeing this, suddenly decentralized systems don’t seem so unreasonable...

lmao wait so thermal management failure took down the entire cme? that's some next-level irony right there... forgot to drain the cooling tower like come on, that's literally day one sysadmin stuff. makes you think about how much infrastructure is held together by duct tape and prayers tbh. network security means nothing if your hardware just turns into a popsicle

Damn, is this really not a joke? Ten hours just because they forgot to add liquidity? I went through the 2018 mining crash, but I never expected a top global exchange to drop the ball like this.

Oh my, forgot to release the funds? That's just too ridiculous, haha. This is the price of centralization, my friend. 10 hours of downtime—how many people got liquidated? LOL, I might as well run my own node instead. That's why you should trust code, not people.

LOL, this is hilarious. Is this really the world's largest futures exchange? Forgot to release funds... I thought it was some elite hacker or something.

Hahaha, this is unbelievable. The world's largest exchange got frozen just because they forgot to add liquidity. This storyline is even more absurd than any hacker tale.

10 hours of downtime... The liquidation risk threshold skyrocketed, and leveraged positions went out of control in an instant. Truly insane.
