I used to think that as long as I kept running, I’d eventually reach the finish line. Later, I realized that many times, no matter how hard we try, we’re just struggling to keep up and not fall behind.

Everyone loves to say “the harder you work, the luckier you get,” but reality is pretty harsh. The proposal you spent several all-nighters perfecting might not be worth as much as someone else’s toast at a dinner party. Hard work can definitely keep food on the table, that’s true, but just grinding your way to leap across social classes is incredibly tough.

“Choices matter more than effort”—that one stings the most and is always easy to say after the fact. That house you didn’t buy ten years ago, that coin you didn’t stock up on five years ago, looking back, you can’t help but think you must have been out of your mind. But at those crossroads, nobody has a crystal ball. That regret of “I could have” can be even more tormenting than outright failure.

Admitting the role of luck does bruise your ego, but you can’t deny it: when the tide rises, even pigs can fly; when it recedes, even eagles have to flap around on the ground. Most of our anxiety comes from trying to grab luck with our bare hands, when it’s simply out of reach.

All we can do is make sure we don’t sink into the mud when luck hasn’t come, and save a few chips for when it finally does.
