Epic Games, Developer of "Fortnite," Announces Mass Layoffs, Says Unrelated to AI

Golden Finance reports that on March 25, Epic Games announced it will lay off more than 1,000 employees. CEO Tim Sweeney also responded to public concerns about artificial intelligence factors.
In a memo sent to employees, Sweeney wrote: “Since everyone is discussing this issue, I want to clarify that the layoffs are unrelated to AI. As AI enhances productivity, we actually want more talented developers to create high-quality content and technology.”
The company stated that this layoff is part of a broader cost-cutting plan. Additionally, by reducing outsourcing contracts, cutting marketing expenses, and delaying some hiring, the company saved over $500 million.
Tim Sweeney compared the current moment to key transitional periods in the company’s history, such as the shift from 2D to 3D games in the 1990s and later the move to online games like Fortnite.
