BP confirms the launch of the Angola New Natural Gas Alliance project
BP has confirmed that natural gas production has begun at the Quiluma gas field in Angola’s New Gas Consortium (NGC) project, as reported by operator Azule Energy. This milestone continues Azule Energy’s strong momentum in project startup and exploration discoveries (a joint venture between BP and Eni, each holding 50%).
The initial production from the Quiluma gas field is expected to be 150 million standard cubic feet per day, increasing to 330 million standard cubic feet per day by the end of 2026.
The NGC project is Angola’s first non-associated gas development project. The gas is produced from the shallow offshore Quiluma gas field, processed at an onshore plant, and then delivered to Angola’s LNG plant for export.
Azule Energy is the operator of the NGC, holding a 37.4% participating interest, with partners including Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (31%), Sonangol E&P (19.8%), TotalEnergies (11.8%), and ANPG as the national concession grantor.
In November 2025, the partners held a ceremony for the completion of the project’s gas processing plant in Soyo, northern Angola.
The startup of the NGC project is the latest achievement in a series of upstream successes for Azule Energy. In July 2025, production began at the Agogo oil field in the Agogo Integrated West Hub project located in Angola’s offshore Block 15/06. The company also announced the launch of the Ndungu development project in February 2026.
Since early 2025, Azule Energy has announced four oil and gas discoveries: the Algaita-01 well and Gajajeira-01 gas discovery in Angola, as well as the Volans-1X and Capricornus-1X discoveries in Namibia’s Orange Basin.
BP announced 12 discoveries across multiple basins in 2025. During the same period, it also launched seven major upstream projects (five of which were accelerated), located in Trinidad and Tobago (two), the UK North Sea, Egypt, Mauritania, Senegal, and the US Gulf region (two), contributing to its goal of launching 10 major projects globally by the end of 2027.
