On March 16, the State Administration for Market Regulation announced that to further strengthen the primary responsibility of online food trading platforms and operators, it has launched a series of actions to improve compliance and quality in online food safety.

First, it will strictly regulate chaotic live-streaming sales, urging live-streaming platforms, rooms, and hosts to strictly implement the “Supervision and Management Regulations on Food Safety Responsibilities for Live E-commerce Operators,” which took effect on March 20. Responsibilities will be clarified, a sales ban list enforced, and misleading marketing language prevented. Second, it will rigorously verify the qualifications of online food products, urging platforms to perform substantive reviews to prevent the sale of foods without proper production and operation licenses, or those using false or counterfeit credentials. Third, it will severely punish false advertising, requiring online food operators to truthfully display information about origin, ingredients, and functions, and prevent the use of inappropriate language related to disease prevention or treatment to deceive consumers.

During the campaign, special rectification efforts will target issues such as live-streamed food sales, online food sales, health foods, and influencer foods. Enforcement will be intensified against counterfeit, substandard, and inferior products. Platforms will be encouraged to sign self-discipline agreements, and cross-regional, online, and offline regulatory cooperation will be strengthened to ensure traceability from the source of food safety risks and to make risks traceable.

The State Administration for Market Regulation stated that it will enforce the strictest supervision, urging platform companies to enhance compliance management and improve quality and safety standards, creating a safe and trustworthy online food consumption environment, and fully safeguarding the public’s “safety on the tip of the tongue.”
