IT House, March 3 — Microsoft today announced a new feature called “Highlight Reels” for the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld console, now in beta testing.

This feature automatically records video clips of exciting moments during gameplay without opening any panels or pressing hotkeys, allowing for easy sharing of short videos.

Microsoft clarified that this feature is currently only being tested on the ROG Xbox Ally X, which means the standard Xbox Ally may not support it yet. It is also unclear whether the company plans to expand Highlight Reels to more devices in the future, such as Windows-based desktops and laptops.

“This feature helps you easily capture highlights during gameplay, such as boss battles or victory moments, and share short video clips with friends online,” said Xbox Chief Product Officer Gabriel De Garenne. “No extra downloads are needed. Highlight Reels allows you to effortlessly edit your highlights during gameplay without leaving the game, so you can focus on the fun.”

Supported games for Highlight Reels include Among Us, Pinocchio’s Lies, Elden Ring, Overwatch, Fortnite, Palworld, and Forza Horizon 5.

Here are the steps to join the Insider Program and try this feature on the ROG Xbox Ally X:

If you haven’t joined yet, first join the Xbox Insider Program: Xbox Insider Home | Xbox Support

Ensure recording settings are enabled:

Set this via the Game Bar: Settings > More Settings > Widgets > Record background during gameplay.

Other ways to change this setting:

Through Gaming Copilot: Gaming Copilot > Settings > Capture Settings > Capture settings in the widget.

Through Windows Settings: Settings > Gaming > Captures > Record what happened.

Launch one of the supported games above.

Once started, Gaming Copilot will automatically capture highlights during gameplay. After the game ends, these clips are automatically compiled into a Highlight Reel, which you can view and share via the “Game Highlights (Preview)” section in the Xbox PC app.

Additionally, Microsoft is testing a “Postgame Recaps” feature among PC players. This feature aims to quickly review recent gaming sessions, including unlocked achievements, playtime, and other key events.
