Anthropic CEO says the company's retention rate far exceeds industry peers; competitors offering $100 million to $500 million still can't lure employees away

According to 1M AI News monitoring, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated at the Morgan Stanley TMT Conference that Anthropic’s employee retention rate is “the highest in the industry, with a clear gap.” All seven co-founders are still in office, and the first employee to leave only appears after the 20th employee hired. Competitors have offered Anthropic researchers salaries ranging from $100 million to $500 million, exceeding professional athlete levels, but the company refused to match, telling employees “you are here for the mission.” Amodei said that large salary increases would only “cause division and damage to the culture,” and “what they are trying to buy is something that cannot be bought — recognition of the mission.”

He cited Meta poaching as an example: Anthropic lost only 2 people, while OpenAI lost “several,” and OpenAI’s scale is about 1.5 times that of Anthropic, so proportionally the gap is 10 to 20 times. Previously disclosed data by Amodei shows that Anthropic’s employee retention rate over the past two years is about 80%, OpenAI’s is around 67%, Google DeepMind’s is approximately 78%, and Meta’s is about 64%. He also stated that Anthropic has “not hit a wall” in AI capability improvements, and “there will be a sudden acceleration this year that will surprise everyone.”
