Though Luce is built with an anime concept, every part of the design has a special message it holds and also conveys. The concept behind the design of the mascot is as follows:

a) The shell-shaped eyes of the mascot with a glowing light denotes perseverance in the faith of the pilgrim.

b) The rosary bead worn on the neck represents a life filled with deep prayer representing the simple, daily Christian prayer.

c) The staff, the Bordone, denotes the demanding journey embarked on by pilgrims. It also shows that the pilgrimage of life is a journey toward eternity.

d) The green boot represents hope pilgrims have of getting to their destination and the mud smear denotes humility and also a sign of the long journey embarked on by pilgrims.

e) The yellow sailors raincoat worn by the mascot denotes the grit of pilgrims through their sojourn. Showing the perseverance and will of pilgrims to triumph through waves of trials as sailors do in raging thunderstorms.

The Non-Human Companions

Luce was accompanied by three non-human companions, these companions are:

a) IUBI: Is a companion guardian angel throughout the journey representing the union between pilgrimage and the divine presence of God. It also shows that pilgrims are never alone throughout their journey giving them courage in moments of solitary suffering. The anchor on the cap of the angel denotes hope.

b) AURA: The dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit, is a symbol of purity, the search for God, freedom, and a messenger of peace.

c) SANTINO: The dog which was for the saint pilgrim, San Rocco, is a sign of divine providence in times of extreme need. It symbolizes fidelity to God’s calling and friendship.

The Human Companions

Luce is accompanied by her friends: Fe (in red coat), Xin (in green coat) and Sky (in blue coat). These companion mascots have almost the same properties as Luce with little variations in the colour of their coat, skin, and their accessories. Their coat colours are in tandem with the colours on the official logo for 2025 Jubilee which denotes the diversity of humanity from all corners of the world.

The mascot, Luce, was created by a co-founder and the Chief Creative Officer of TOKIDOKI, Simone Legno for the Catholic Church on the occasion of the Church’s 2025 Jubilee. On this creation, Simone commented that “Luce can represent the sentiments that resonate in the hearts of the younger generations”.

The Luce mascot was then formally unveiled by the Catholic Church during a news conference held in its honour at the Vatican on October 28, 2024.

Luce made its debut public appearance when it was unveiled by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization’s section for New Evangelization who also doubles as the chief organizer of the Holy Year 2025 during a news conference at the Vatican on October 28, 2024.
