Meta engineers have warned of "Quantum Doomsday". This is a threat related to the ability of quantum computers to break standard encryption. This situation can affect many systems such as banks, satellites, military systems, telecommunications centers, blockchains, and cryptocurrency exchanges.
Good news, NIST, a part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, has standardized the first quantum-resistant encryption algorithms. With the help of most major institutions, governments, and technology organizations, they have begun implementing quantum-secure encryption protocols.
The bad news is that these new encryption methods cannot protect previously stolen data. "Store Now, Decrypt Later" (SNDL) attacks mean that quantum computers could decrypt this data in the future.
Although Meta claims to have taken measures against future SNDL attacks, there is no plan for data stolen before the implementation of new quantum security protocols. This shows the accuracy of the warning "Quantum Apocalypse is coming".
