March 17, 2026 Spot Gold Midday Analysis

Gold holds the 5000 lifeline, long-short battle enters critical window period, maintaining composure is key to grasping the rhythm.

Yesterday's gold price moved like a roller coaster, opening low in early session and plunging sharply to around 4967 USD, rebounding to 5030 USD then pulling back under pressure, closing near the 5000 level at the end of day with a bearish daily candle, overall showing a weak correction pattern. Early session trading in a narrow range above 5000, with long and short sides repeatedly pulling, no clear direction established yet.

The Fed's March 19 interest rate decision meeting is approaching. The market has basically confirmed no rate cut in March, with June rate cut probability also dropping below 20%. High interest rates will persist longer, with the strong US dollar keeping gold prices under pressure. Gold rallied too much yesterday, with institutions taking profits at the 5000 level, creating significant selling pressure. However, tensions in the Middle East remain high, central banks continue buying gold, and excessive declines will attract bottom-fishing funds to support prices, so downside is limited.

Daily chart breaks below short-term moving averages, MACD death cross, bears hold short-term advantage, but KDJ approaches oversold territory, another significant drop would indicate loss of downward momentum. Key levels are very clear: 5000 is the lifeline below, looking at 4980-4950 on a break; resistance above at 5030-5050, failure to break remains weak. Currently oscillating near 5000 with no clear direction, wait for now.

Short-term strategy uses 5000 as the dividing line: on pullbacks to 4980-5000 zone, accumulate light positions going long with targets at 5030-5050; on rebounds to near 5030 without breakthrough, short positions with targets at 5000-4980, strict stop losses, avoid heavy single positions.
