Driverless Down Las Vegas Boulevard

Uber said the deal with autonomous-vehicle developer Motional would see fully driverless vehicles heading down the famous Strip by the end of the year.

The two companies said that Uber riders in Las Vegas can now be matched with an all-electric Motional Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 robotaxi at pick-up zones along Las Vegas Boulevard, including Resorts World, Encore at the Wynn, WestgateResort & Casino, Downtown Las Vegas and Town Square near the airport.

Uber said it had unlocked “an exciting new way to hit the jackpot on the Strip.”

Motional’s IONIQ 5 is among the first SAE Level 4-capableautonomous vehicles certified under the U.S.’s Federal MotorVehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), according to Uber. The vehicles will ‌initially operate with a human safetyoperator behind the wheel, with a fully driverless service expected to be launched by late 2026.

Partnerships are Accelerating

“We’re excited to take the next step with Motional as we launch autonomous rides in Las Vegas,” said Sarfraz Maredia, President of Autonomous Mobility & Delivery at Uber. “This milestone reflects our shared commitment to introduce autonomous vehicles in a way that prioritizes safety, increases reliability, and expands access to more ride options for our customers.”

The rollout is part of a 10-year partnership between Uber and Motional to scale autonomous ride-hailing, and follows earlier pilots for delivery in Los Angeles, California and Las Vegas itself.

Earlier this week, Uber signed a ‌multi-year deal to deploy Amazon AMZN +0.10% ▲ self-driving unit Zoox’s robotaxis on its platform, withlimited services already live in Las Vegas and a pilot riderprogram underway in San Francisco. Uber, Nissan NSANY -3.13% ▼ and British firm Wayve have also agreed to collaborate, targeting ‌a pilot robotaxi launch in Tokyo by late 2026, markingUber’s first autonomous vehicle partnership in Japan.

Uber has said that it will invest more than $100 million to develop autonomous vehicle charging hubs as the sector races to commercialize driverless ‌mobility at scale.
