Middle East Conflict | US Defense Secretary: No Evidence That Iran Laid Mines in the Strait of Hormuz
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated at a press conference that there is currently no concrete evidence indicating Iran has laid mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
Hegseth’s assessment contrasts sharply with earlier reports this week, which claimed Iran had laid about a dozen mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a shipping route that transports one-fifth of the world’s oil.
When asked about Iran laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, Hegseth said, “We have heard discussions about this, as you have reported, in a flippant and exaggerated manner, but we have no definitive evidence to prove it.”
Hegseth emphasized that the United States will not allow Iran to challenge maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, he pointed out that the U.S. has a range of options to address nuclear issues, including giving Iran the choice to abandon its nuclear weapons.
