Who is Hodler - The journey from a typo to Bitcoin philosophy
Hodler is not just an ordinary term within the cryptocurrency community but also a symbol of long-term investment strategy. To understand why there is a strong hodler community today, we need to go back to 2013—a time when this term was born.
The Surprising Origin of HODL from a 2013 Comment
The story begins on December 18, 2013, on Bitcoin Talk—the official forum of the Bitcoin community. A member posted with the title “TÔI ĐANG HODLING”—a typo of “HOLDING.” At that time, BTC had just set a record by surpassing $1,000 for the first time, but just a few days later, the price of Bitcoin rapidly crashed to $522 😱
The author of this post intentionally left the typo—not accidentally, but to emphasize his attitude. He admitted to being a poor trader, unable to buy the dip or sell at the top, so he decided to simply hold Bitcoin and ignore the price fluctuations. That was the first philosophy of a hodler.
Hodler is Not a Trader—Why Are They Different?
The difference between a hodler and a trader is fundamental. While traders try to buy low and sell high, hodlers accept market volatility and persist in holding their crypto assets. HODL has become an acronym for “Hold On for Dear Life”—meaning “just hold regardless of the price,” emphasizing the importance of discipline and patience in investing.
Hodler in the Crypto Community—A Sign of Experience
Today, HODL is not just a word; it has become an inseparable part of Bitcoin’s philosophy. When someone uses the term “hodler” or writes “HODL,” you can easily recognize that this person has been in the crypto world for a long time and has deep knowledge of cryptocurrency. It’s like a “membership card” of the community—only those who truly understand Bitcoin’s history naturally use this term. Finding a hodler is finding someone with a long-term vision, someone who is not scared by short-term fluctuations and believes in Bitcoin’s long-term potential 😉
