Deep Tide TechFlow News, on March 13, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin issued a public statement regarding his relationship with the Future of Life Institute (FLI) and his stance on AI risks. Vitalik stated that in 2021, he passively received a large amount of Dogecoin such as SHIB, with a paper value exceeding $1 billion at that time. He immediately donated half of it to CryptoRelief and the other half to FLI, initially expecting FLI to cash out at most $10 million to $25 million, but FLI actually cashed out about $500 million.

Vitalik pointed out that FLI later shifted its internal strategy, making large-scale political actions its main approach, which is significantly different from its original course. He expressed concern that using large funds to promote political actions could lead to unintended consequences and might evolve into an authoritarian solution, such as restricting open-source AI to support a single “correct” organization to gain dominance. Such practices carry serious backlash risks.
