The key to recognizing a person lies in these four points

Abstract generation in progress

Identifying a person shouldn’t be based solely on right and wrong,

But also on paying attention to subtle details and unusual signs.

#01 Ordinary Matters, Observe a Person’s Character

As the saying goes, “Observe a spot to know the leopard, see a fallen leaf to know autumn.”

Details reveal character, small acts show the heart.

The Tang Dynasty novel “Yuanquanzi” records a story: During the Tang Dynasty, Minister Lü Yuanying often played chess with a guest.

Once, while they were playing, an official document arrived. Lü Yuanying had to review it first, but the guest secretly swapped a chess piece when Lü was distracted.

When Lü returned, he noticed the change but said nothing. The next day, he asked the guest to find another opportunity.

The saying goes, “A person’s true nature is revealed in actions, and their heart is hidden within.”

The most ordinary daily acts are like a mirror, reflecting a person’s true character.

Those subtle gestures also best reveal the brilliance or ugliness of human nature.

#02 Urgency and Promise, See if Someone Keeps Their Word

There has never been a shortage of clever people in this world; what’s lacking is reliability—people who give clear commitments, follow through, and respond.

Some are talented but often make empty promises, sweet-talking others, with little actual action.

The story “Wei Wenghou’s Hunt” records a small incident.

Once, Wei Wenghou and his ministers agreed to go hunting together. Everyone arrived as scheduled, but suddenly it rained heavily. Someone suggested they just listen to the rain and enjoy wine, and go hunting another day.

Wei Wenghou promised the ministers, but he was actually preparing to go to the hunting ground. His attendants asked him why.

Wei Wenghou said, “I promised the forest keeper we’d go hunting. Now that we’re not going, I must cancel with him, or he’ll be waiting for us.”

After saying that, he mounted his horse and personally explained the cancellation to the forest keeper.

A person who keeps their promises is reliable, consistent, and straightforward. They do not cut corners, shirk, deceive, or disappoint. In any era, this is a rare and valuable trait.

#03 Violating Common Sense, See if Someone Has Hidden Motives

In the late years of Duke Huan of Qi, Guan Zhong was seriously ill. Before he died, he warned Duke Huan not to reuse Yi Ya, Qi Fang, and Shu Diao. The reason was that these three men flattered the ruler and betrayed common sense, likely harboring improper motives and unworthy of trust.

Chef Yi Ya, on a whim, once killed his own son to cook him into meat stew to please Duke Huan.

Prince Qi Fang served Duke Huan for 15 years and never returned home even after his father’s death.

Shu Diao, to stay close to Duke Huan, even mutilated himself.

Yet, Duke Huan, now old and dim-witted, favored these men and continued to rely on them. This eventually led to chaos in Qi. The three traitors conspired to imprison Duke Huan and starved him to death.

The great hegemon Duke Huan of Qi ended up like this, simply because he failed to recognize people and trusted the wrong ones.

When dealing with others, don’t be so moved by superficial kindness that you lose your judgment.

If such “kindness” violates common sense or exceeds normal bounds, you must stay calm and think rationally.

Keep a proper guard against them to prevent villains from taking advantage.

#04 Facing Difficulties, Assess a Person’s Ability

A doctor’s skill is judged by whether they can treat complex and difficult cases; a person’s ability is measured by how well they solve problems.

Before 1991, Nokia produced not only mobile phones but also computers, TVs, and other electronics.

In 1992, the company faced losses. Internal management blamed each other and complained about poor leadership and mismanagement.

In this crisis, Ma Oli was appointed CEO of Nokia.

After taking office, Ma Oli did not complain about inheriting a mess or criticize previous management. Instead, she actively communicated with all parties and launched a new strategic focus on mobile phones.

Thanks to her excellent ability, she successfully solved Nokia’s biggest problems at the time, leading the company to a revival.

Anyone can handle routine tasks, but not everyone has the skills to manage complex, confusing situations.

Those who can respond calmly and resolve issues effectively are truly capable.
