The U.S. prosecutors have filed a motion with the U.S. District Court in New York to reopen the case against Roman Storm, who is accused of conspiracy to money laundering and conspiracy to violate sanctions laws, with a scheduled court date set for early October. Previously, Storm was convicted in August 2025 for operating an unlicensed remittance business related to Tornado Cash. Tornado Cash is a cryptocurrency mixer accused of handling over $1 billion in illicit funds. This move has sparked criticism from advocates in the cryptocurrency industry, who believe there are legal flaws in the case that could hinder the United States' leadership in the field, despite recent updates from the Treasury Department acknowledging the legitimate use of mixers and other privacy tools.
