Former UK Labour Minister Rushanara Ali advocates for a complete ban on cryptocurrency political donations, calling them a “way for foreign interference in our democracy.” According to The Guardian, her call aligns with the stance of many MPs and anti-corruption organizations who believe that the opacity and traceability risks of cryptocurrencies could undermine the fairness of elections. The organization Spotlight on Corruption pointed out that the UK Electoral Commission currently lacks sufficient authority to regulate these risks and cited data indicating that only 8% of the UK population uses cryptocurrencies. Although the UK Reform Party is set to become the first major party to accept such donations in 2025, increased scrutiny is underway as bans are implemented in other regions like Ireland and Brazil.
