Under the wave of combining AI and blockchain, decentralized storage is becoming the infrastructure for Web3 applications. Walrus, as the core storage layer of the Sui ecosystem, is redefining the costs and possibilities of data storage with innovative technical solutions and token incentive mechanisms.
The biggest breakthrough lies in the adoption of erasure coding technology, especially the RedStuff algorithm. This scheme shards data across different nodes, ensuring high availability with only 4 to 5 times the replication factor. Compared to the 100-fold redundancy of traditional full nodes on the chain, costs can be reduced by dozens of times. This is particularly friendly for storing large files such as AI training datasets, NFT metadata, and streaming media. Importantly, the data also supports dynamic modification, updating, and deletion, breaking the immutability constraints of protocols like Arweave.
The token economy is also well-developed. There are a total of 5 billion tokens, with approximately 1.47 billion in circulation (29.57%), used for paying storage fees, node staking, and governance voting. The entire model incorporates a deflationary mechanism: staking by inefficient nodes will be partially burned, and some fees are allocated to subsidize developers, forming a self-incentivizing ecological cycle. This design combines technological innovation with economic incentives, making Walrus not just a storage solution but also a driving force for the implementation of Web3 applications.
