Một cựu phó cảnh sát thuộc Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department đã bị kết án hơn 5 năm tù vì lợi dụng chức vụ để hỗ trợ tống tiền và dàn dựng bắt giữ giả nhằm hãm hại đối thủ kinh doanh.
Theo thông báo ngày thứ Hai từ Bộ Tư pháp Hoa Kỳ, bị cáo Michael David Coberg (44 tuổi) bị tuyên án 63 tháng tù và buộc bồi thường 127.000 USD sau khi nhận tội âm mưu tống tiền và xâm phạm quyền công dân.
Công tố viên cho biết Coberg đã lạm dụng vị trí phó cảnh sát kiêm phi công trực thăng để hỗ trợ Adam Iza — một doanh nhân crypto tự xưng là “Crypto Godfather” — trong việc nhắm vào các đối thủ kinh doanh.
Vụ việc diễn ra trong năm 2021, liên quan đến nhiều hành vi đe dọa nhằm giải quyết tranh chấp tài chính. Trong một vụ việc, Coberg đi cùng các đối tượng có vũ trang để đối đầu nạn nhân và đứng ngoài khi Iza đe dọa bạo lực, ép chuyển 127.000 USD. Hộ chiếu của nạn nhân cũng bị tịch thu trước khi được thả.
Nhà chức trách còn mô tả một âm mưu khác khi Coberg cùng đồng phạm dàn dựng một vụ bắt giữ giả. Nhóm này dụ nạn nhân từ Miami đến Los Angeles, yêu cầu người này mua chất cấm, sau đó sắp xếp để lực lượng thực thi pháp luật chặn xe và bắt giữ.
“Coberg đã tuyên thệ bảo vệ Hiến pháp và pháp luật Hoa Kỳ, nhưng lại phản bội lời thề đó vì lòng tham,” công tố viên nhấn mạnh.
