Golden Finance reports that on April 1, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on March 31 that the city would allow the short-form video social media platform TikTok to be used again on government electronic devices. That day, Adams posted a message on the social media platform saying, “TikTok, we’re back.” According to the Associated Press, a memorandum provided by Adams’s office shows that New York City government departments are allowed to post content on the social media platform. The policy change is intended to expand the reach of the city government’s information dissemination. The memorandum said, “We want to open up new channels to engage with the public and help deliver the information New Yorkers need.” At the same time, the memorandum requires that departments’ official account operations must follow a series of security safeguards, including using dedicated devices that do not contain sensitive data and assigning specific personnel to manage the accounts, among other measures.
