Tesla (TSLA) Climbs 4% After CyberTruck Lead Departs
Shares in Tesla (TSLA) stock are climbing Monday amist a tech market rebound, and following the lead behind the Cybertruck initiative departed the company. Siddhant Awasthi, the Tesla executive and lead engineer of the Cybertruck program, says he is leaving after eight years at the EV giant. In a LinkedIn farewell post, Awasthi thanked Elon Musk, senior mentors, and “rockstar colleagues” for an “incredible run” that took him from intern to program chief.
“This decision wasn’t easy, especially with so much exciting growth on the horizon,” Awasthi wrote. “Tesla vehicles are incredibly complex systems that often don’t get the credit they deserve, but I’ve witnessed firsthand how they’ve changed lives.”
While not offering a specific reason for his departure or next steps, experts quickly looked at the Cybertruck’s recent performance on the markets. U.S. registrations for the Cybertruck plunged about 63% year-over-year in Q3, landing near 5,400 units. The plunge extends even steeper overseas, where Tesla continues to see sales declines in the EU.

This year, senior engineers, including longtime software VP David Lau and others tied to battery and robotics programs, have left the company. Leadership appears to be scrambling, even after last week’s shareholder meeting. The departure of the Cybertruck’s lead engineer amid production issues and declining demand signals potential difficulties in executing Tesla’s ambitious projects, including Musk’s ambitious flying car project.

Tech stocks led the market higher at the opening bell on Monday after the Senate took a big step toward ending the record-breaking government shutdown. A new bill was released late Sunday and quickly advanced in a key Senate procedural vote, after enough Democrats joined with Republicans to avoid a filibuster.
